New York time, Engineering News-Record (ENR) released the results of the winners of global best projects and awards of merit. The Colombo Port City Development Project in Sri Lanka constructed by CHEC won the 2020 ENR Global Best Project Award (Airport/Port).
This is the 8th global best project award organized by ENR. Moreover, this is the first ENR Global Best Project Award of CHEC under the airport/port category this year, after the Global Award of Merit for Airport Projects was awarded to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Macao Boundary Crossing Facilities Project in 2018. This event was organized mainly for projects completed between January 2019 and April 2020. A total of 30 projects from 21 countries and regions won the Global Best Project Award or Award of Merit under 17 categories, notably airports and ports, railways, roads, bridges and tunnels. Among them, six projects from four Chinese companies won awards.
Colombo Port City is a large urban complex development project invested, constructed and run by CHEC. With an investment of US $1.4 billion, the first phase of the project brought in an investment of about US $13 billion in secondary development, which makes it the most spectacular development project in the history of Sri Lanka. In 2018, Forbes named Colombo Port City as one of the "Five New Cities Affecting the Future".
In 2014, President Xi Jinping and then-Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa witnessed the launching of the project and cut the ribbon together. As an important achievement of deep connection of China’s “Belt and Road” Initiative and Sri Lanka’s “2030 Vision”, the Colombo Port City Development Project, during its construction and development, has fulfilled its corporate social responsibility. It successively implemented several public welfare activities such as the “Fishermen’s Livelihood Improvement Program”, the “National Unity Relay around the Island” and the “Colombo Beautiful Beach Program”. Hence, it has built a good reputation in Colombo.
This May, during a phone call with Sri Lankan President Gotabaya, President Xi Jinping underscored the strategic cooperative partnership between China and Sri Lanka, which is based on sincerity, mutual assistance and long-lasting friendship. The friendship and mutual trust between both countries have stood the test of time and have been improved in the joint fight against the epidemic. Both parties should, on the premise of ensuring epidemic prevention and control, gradually resume practical cooperation in various sectors, promote major cooperation projects systematically and promote high-quality joint construction of the "Belt and Road", which will lead to Sri Lanka's economic revitalization. President Gotabaya also stated that Sri Lanka is willing to strengthen cooperation with China in economy, trade, tourism, infrastructure and other fields, and promote the major cooperation projects under the “Belt and Road” Initiative such as Colombo Port City. Besides, Sri Lanka welcomes more Chinese enterprises to invest and cooperate in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is ready to work with China to build a community with a shared destiny for mankind.
During the epidemic, the project company donated medical protective supplies to all sectors of society in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa tweeted his thanks for such benevolence.
ENR (Engineering News-Record) is the most authoritative academic journal in the field of engineering construction in the world, known as the "barometer" of the engineering industry. Also known as the "Oscar" of the engineering industry, the objective of the ENR Global Best Engineering Award is to select the projects with the most global spirit and international influence, and recognize outstanding design and construction teams. The selection award criterion is picky. In addition to construction quality, safety performance and innovative ideas, special emphasis is laid on the social significance and core values of the project.
